Hermeneutics Resource Spotlight: David Vessey’s Gadamer Reading Group on YouTube

I want to alert readers of Hermeneutical Movements to a valuable resource for learning more about Gadamer’s texts and hermeneutics: Dr. David Vessey’s  (Grand Valley State University) YouTube channel which hosts recordings from his ongoing online Gadamer Reading Group alongside brief lectures composed for his philosophy courses and public talks. In each meeting, the group discusses Gadamer’s texts—from Truth and Method to essays on language, art, and current translations of his work. Vessey’s work with the group offers a rare, sustained record of collective, dialogical engagement with the text, a format very much in keeping with the conversational character of understanding that Gadamer himself theorized and practiced.

Alongside the channel, I have added a set of lectures Dr. Vessey delivered at the University of Calgary on epistemic injustice, social epistemology, and hermeneutical injustice—themes that extend Gadamerian hermeneutics into urgent contemporary questions about how structural inequities can distort or foreclose a speaker’s capacity to be heard and understood. The lectures are organized below by day and session:

I  am grateful to Dr. Vessey for making this material publicly available and recommend both resources to readers working in hermeneutics, epistemology, and critical social theory.
